Heroism on the Highway

With a regular ration of vehicle collisions going on out there on our roadways - here is a story of heroism on the highway that makes us glad for the quick thinking among us. In a report from several days ago of an occurrence that actually transpired in July 2010 an eighty year old gentleman has passed out behind the wheel of his truck in Washington State.

He had, in fact, just suffered a heart attack - albeit a mild one. He fell forward, unconscious, on the steering wheel and his foot remained on the accelerator. Mind you, he was unresponsive and not responsible for the vehicle's forward movement.

As the fellow's vehicle began to drift across the lanes of the thoroughfare another driver noticed that the car was weaving and quickly determined that the driver was in distress. In an act of bravery he pulled his vehicle in front of the wayward and out-of-control truck that quickly rear-ended him. Then, with bumpers attached the conscious driver began to gently apply the brakes while steering the truck and comatose driver safely off the road and out of immediate danger.

As police and rescue personnel descended on the scene they realized that had the alert driver not stepped in (so to speak) when he had - the elderly man was poised to literally take out a whole line of traffic and cause untold property damage and injuries from the anticipated accident. In risking his own life - the quick thinking - and some might say even fearless - driver has been credited with perhaps saving the lives of many others.

Frankly, with blog after blog detailing the carnage of semi truck and other accidents - it's a welcome relief to share a story of heroism.
